Artist Statement

My work is inspired by my time growing up playing video games as well as my life experiences. One of my favorite experiences was my trip to Japan; I was influenced by the culture and architecture because they are different from America. When I came back from my trip to Japan, I had the urge to draw Japanese designs which I later used in a few of my projects. When it comes to some projects where I don’t know what to make, I go to stores for inspiration. For one of my projects, I went to Hobby Lobby to look for an object that would inspire me to model and animate. The object was a lantern that had distinct elements to it while also having repetitive designs. This object taught me a lot about Maya and Substance, learning how to make repetitive designs, special objects like a cylinder with holes in it, and complex textures like rust, glass, dirt and scratches.

My style is influenced by video games, fan art, and Japanese paintings. First, I think about my favorite games and artists in the past and decide the style I want to go with. Then I find specific scenes or art pieces that would be great for reference and try to figure out how I can incorporate them into my work.

My interests have changed a lot over the years. Before I used to love sci-fi and I wanted to make sci-fi games like Halo but now my interests are varied. The theme I am inspired to do right now is based on Japanese culture because they bring an interesting theme that fascinates me. I also enjoy making horror art such as creepy characters and demons. In horror games, I love how the color schemes are usually dark toned and the scary designs you can make always fascinate me.

When people play my video games, I want them to feel fascinated by the design and artwork of the game. I feel the looks of the video game is what draws people to play the game and the mechanics are the next essential part. I want people, when they first see the game, to be amazed at the details of the environment and character, wanting to explore the game before going on quests. I love what concepts artists bring to video games and hope that someday I can bring something spectacular to video games as well.

Bio

I am student at Texas A&M University studying to be a Game Artist. I have been playing video games almost my whole life and I want to bring my experience from playing games into the video games I create. I am interested in character modeling and environment design for video games because I am fascinated by the artistic designs video games can have. Right now I have participated in game jams like Chillennium and TAGD and also school projects for video games and have learned a lot from each game I made. I am always interested in learning from people and I hope that in the future I become as skilled as the environment designers and characters designers that I look up to.
